[Comment]
I don't remember reviewing entries with such a variety of content before this year. Putting it another way, I feel I saw more works with stronger emphases on "expressive" characteristics of computer graphics, rather than purely "technical" aspects. I would expect this to result in more artists emerging among the audience, those who have found what more computer graphics can do. This group of people may be those who have been using more conventional art techniques, like painters and sculptors, and might rather have disliked the patterns of CG; they may be those who have simply had no opportunity to start dealing with it.
In a sense, the representation of CG has come to maturity. At the same time, it shows that CG have developed to become such an international expressive tool that is adjustable to so-called cultural diversification.
Meanwhile, I found very many entries this year that were sober in colors, and quiet in expressions. It is hard to say if this trend was a reflection of any given atmosphere in this modern era, or if it was due to the fact that many artists have matured their way of expressions. Next time, I would like to see more artists try more various colors and interesting shapes in their works. I cannot wait till I see many more entries next year and so on.
[Comments on Grand Prize Winner]
"Carnival" does not resemble any pictures neatly painted in oil, or (sophisticated) "art," but it was developed from the forms that might have been more familiar to the artist, such as cave paintings or animation, in free movements. The "Carnival"'s atmosphere is well represented by the use of colors—especially, adding a decorative touch of yellow, on the traditional background color, gave the whole picture a good accent.
