| Flat art forms that visualize objects compress three dimensions into two, collapsing space into a plane. Instead of portraying an object or event, this abstraction suggests the chromatic longing to cheat nature, portraying the universe as flat, then envisioning its extension into creative space by the expansion of desire. |
[Comments on receiving the Grand Prize] |
Artists are proven dedicated by continuing to follow their vision despite a lack of recognition or financial gain. Few artists, however, are so insulated by the purity of their goals that they do not find satisfaction in discovering that others appreciate their work. The value in recognition beyond tangible reward is measurable by the dedication and awareness of the grantor. By having established a digital-image program that includes substantial financial awards and a web-site gallery of digital art, Toray Industries and their personnel prove themselves responsible for an award and recognition program of the highest stature.
On a professional level, I am strongly satisfied by having been granted this award in the Sixth Toray Digital Creation Awards program. Personally, however, I am touched, thrilled, and deeply appreciative. Surely, Toray Industries via their Digital Creation Awards will encourage the growth and recognition of digital art not only on the internet, but across the globe.
As supported by Toray Industries and the corporations and agencies influenced by the estimable DCA, digital art will flourish not as an esoteric type of electronic play, but simply as another segment of the greater world of art. |
