[Comments on the prize-winning work] |
| This artwork was born out of an inspiration I got from the beauty of different colors, when I was walking on a carpet of fallen leaves. Not only the beauty of flowers, but also leaves falling off from trees, are so attractive to me. The phrase "Momiji-gari" ("fallen leaves hunting") shows that its attractiveness is universal. Further, when the winter arrives and the leaves are slightly covered with snow, the scenery is so beautiful that I can hardly step on leaves. |
[Comments on receiving the Excellence Award] |
I am very excited, and moved, to have received such a wonderful award two years in a row.
What I most treasure in my daily life is to feel something seasonal outdoors, by looking for trifle happenings that could easily be overlooked. I attempt this activity by recalling all the senses I have polished and accumulated in my own past. I would find that spring has come when I see little wild flowers budding out from a crack of concrete walls; I watch out to feel how crisp the air is; how different the color of the sky is; how the clouds are flowing in the sky; what the breezes feel like; and what the color of water looks like, and so forth. There is no need to go out to the fields or mountains; there needs not be a bunch of gorgeous flowers to find such wonderful scenery at my feet.
Receiving such an honorable award has further motivated me to "feel" more, and actively express what I feel. Thank you very much. |
