| Considering the given thematic subject Setsu-Getsu-Ka, I expressed four seasons by replacing them with the human life cycle. The lying face that appears in my work means death, while the cherry blossom tree that sticks out from the center of the face means rebirth. Meanwhile, flowers are a symbol of youth and power, while they also imply the meaning of transience, for they will eventually fall off. I picked cherry blossoms to stress transience. Next, I used chestnuts as a symbol of life that will continue generations. Even though the theme Setsu-Getsu-Ka is uniquely Japanese, instead of being caught by its image, I wanted to give it a broader meaning. Thus, in producing this work, I used mythical factors learned from different parts of the world, such as stories in which humans and gods transform into plants, or a story about plants that are budding from God's corpse. | ||||||||||||

| Thank you for selecting my artwork. I am very happy and honored that it was highly recognized in this manner. Nature, which repeats the circulation of birth, death and rebirth, represents the human life cycle itself. As I saw elegance in the appearance and changes of the Nature, I depicted Setsu-Getsu-Ka (or four seasons) by replacing the concept with the human life cycle. It has been a great encouragement to me to have been given the Honorable Mention Award for this artwork. I am now determined to keep working on producing good works. |
