[Comments on the Prize-winning work] |
| Naming my newborn daughter Aya (or "color"), motivated me to start creating abstract works, by giving me a theme of creating new sets of colors by inter-crossing various colors. This artwork can be considered to be a grand sum of such an engagement. I believe colors activate the world, and also have power to create an order. I set my goal to create this work in a manner so that each person who would view it could see life in its colors and form, and his or her own unique story within it. |
[Comments on receiving the Honorable Mention Award] |
Thank you very much for the special honor I have received. On one day last year, it occurred to me that I should re-launch my activity as an artist after some time away. That was when I started a rather bold trial: to create one piece of artwork every day. While I almost failed to keep up with this resolution of mine a few times, I am working on one right now, believing that this will be good ascetic training. Among those works I have created, the prize-winning one was born after I restructured, destroyed, and added some touches to, a multiple number of works I had previously completed on different days in the past. During the period of time I worked on this work, I went through both pleasurable sensations and friction while the concept of work kept quickly fluctuating. I now recall, in the twilight of dawn, competing against the sun-- whether or not my work would be finished before the sun rose.
It has been a great encouragement to me to have received this award. I would like to keep on creating artworks, the work process of which I can enjoy. |
