[Comment] This time, again, we had to work hard to screen the entries, as there was another bunch of powerful tour de force of submission with great quality. It was a trouble full of enjoyment! In fact, I did feel the quality was upgraded overall, compared with the last competition. Also, the fact that we had laid out thematic subjects for different categories brought about a positive result: The increased number of very positive artworks. Among them, the best works were entered especially in the category with the thematic subject of "color." The-Excellence-Award-winning artwork for the "color" category, is entitled "Summer Flower." It is a lilting fine piece of work which is reminiscent of delicate touches of brush-- it eradicates the image of digital works often being rather inorganic. Meanwhile, the Excellence Award for "words" category went to another brilliant work. A boisterous air was so vividly expressed in this piece of work! It leads the audience to the world that is filled with rings of people's laughter and conversations. I got the impression that the thematic subject of "Setsu-Getsu-Ka" was a bit too profound and hard to interpret for many. However, among the entries for this category, the-Excellence-Award-winning work called "kawariyuku..." was a fascinatingly elegant piece. The artist very well designed the way of the Nature. The Grand Prize went to "THE EXPANSION OF DESIRE." This artwork, going along with the given thematic subject of "color," perfectly depicted the infatuation, and a sense of thirst for colors. It, at the same time, also makes a substantial suggestion as to how we artists should consider the bi-planar and three-dimensional design work. It was an awesome epic. Lastly, I noticed there were very few entries in the Junior Section. I would like to expect many more young artists to give it a try for next year's competition.

[Comment] It was again my pleasure to help with the judging of the Sixth Annual Toray DCA. This year saw a marked leap in the number and quality of the entries. I was especially impressed with the diversity of the entries. In past years, there seemed to be a focus on certain types of images and a lack of variety. This year however saw a veritable blooming of variety in themes, colors, and imagery. Digital has taken a second seat to creativity as the medium has evolved! Mr. Turk's "THE EXPANSION OF DESIRE" was especially interesting and fun! The image, created with 2D planes combined to give the image of three dimensions, and the lack of colors creating the impression of colors was fascinating. I am of course looking forward to his entry next year!

[Comment] Welcoming the 6th season of DCA, we took a new approach; we called for entries separately by a various different thematic subjects. As a result, we not only received the most number of entries ever, but also saw a new trend in their characteristics: 1) the works were entered from all over the world, and they were created with international perspectives and attitudes; 2) the quality of the artworks entered improved greatly, compared with those from the last year and the years before; and 3) the change of quality was also seen especially in the increased variety of expressions. We also newly established the Junior Section for the entries by young artists. Unfortunately, however, there were not as many entries as we would have liked to see in that category. Nevertheless, most of the entries in this section were from abroad, which was exciting. The works were all cheerful, unique and creative. The wonderful artwork entitled "THE EXPANSION OF DESIRE" won the Grand Prize, for the category of which the theme subject was "color." I was very much attracted by its three-dimensional, powerful modeling. The eerie atmosphere of a colorless object, which was expanding, while longing for "colors," was well pictorialized to the fullest of its space. It was a profound artwork. Besides the Grand Prize winner, there were many other great works among who won the Excellence Award, and Honorable Mention Awards in each of the thematic category. Among them, I especially loved the work called "kawariyuku...," which won the Excellence Award of the "Setsu-Getsu-Ka" (Snow, the Moon, and Flowers) category, for its gorgeous, yet delicate and lyrical scenery. Also exceptional was "Summer Flowers," which has musical, elegant colors, and also won the Excellence Award for the "color" category. Finally, "music," another Excellence Award winning work for the "words" category, wonderfully expressed a babble of voices as if they came out from an emptied toy box. They were all superb. Lastly, I was very impressed with the work called "Faces of Color," the Grand Prize winner of the Junior Section. I hand it to the artist's wonderful power of imagination! I am looking forward to finding more entries by Japanese artists for this section in the next year and beyond.
