Subject:Cities that Breathe

[Comments on the prize-winning work]
If you go to the factory site along the seashore of an urban area, you will find a scary-at-a-glance, yet, actually complicated and gorgeous form of beauty. Or, it may remind you of something like a bare organ. In fact, I think it is the heart of a city that is breathing. Such an atmosphere was what I wanted to express, in the form of a unique urban object.

[On receiving the award]
Thank you for the Honorable Mention Award. I only used a painting software and painted it by hand, and as a result, I thought it came out rather old-fashion. This made me doubt that I would receive any award for it, so I am even happier. The image I tried to express is the factory district that is located along the Bay Area Expressway. I am artistically attracted to such totally functional scenery. It represents the heart of the city, that is the strong sense of existence, in which, though we cannot actually see, there are people working. That is why ruins are not good. I never feel attracted to the scenery of ruins; in fact, it is so scary that I cannot even come close to it.
