[Overall Evaluation]
This year’s entries in general have depth and variety which previous years did not have. In that sense, this year’s competition was very interesting. In the process of screening, we had rally after rally and had a very fruitful series of discussions. One thing judges were very impressed by was that there were so many works on the theme we set and created and came up with original worlds which none of us had ever expected. We realized that there were so many different interpretations for one given expression. It is very interesting.
Unlike usual years, many unique works received awards. Some of them for highly original pieces. So the result of screening itself is very unique and interesting. Many of the works which unfortunately did not receive an award, we equally find very unique. There was a wide range of variety in the entries.
Eight years has passed since Toray created DCA. After 8 years, we have so much variety and depth in the entries. I am looking forward to another series of extraordinary works next year.
[Evaluation]
We found most of entries under the “Dream” theme expressed “harsh and dark dreams” rather than “rosy and promising dreams”. We wonder if the tendency reflects contemporary society. Among the entries entitled “Leasure”, many really expressed “Another World”. It was also interesting as the reactions we had were totally different from what we originally expected. “Su-Kurubus” by Tadaaki Mizushina received the Excellence Award under this theme. His work is also far beyond our expectations and therefore very impressive. It offers a unique perspective with very precise details. It expresses a fantastic depth that no other works approach. That is exactly the issue on which the whole committee members unanimously felt.
The technique used in the “Harmony of Sun and Moon”, received the Excellence Award under the theme of "Harmony/Tranquility/Japaneseness" which imitates the gold leaf technique on Japanese paintings. It is outstanding as it successfully conveys the traditional Japanese world of elegance through computer graphics.
Among the other good entries, Ryusuke Ikeda received the Grand Prize with his “Symbolic Expressions Imaged through Lacquer Work” scanned images of trees in the center around which he presented a world of endless repetition. It effectively uses gold powder and generates a kind of rhythm. Judges liked the idea of endless continuous time implied in his work. We are sorry that there were not many entries in the Junior Section. Shunsuke Hayashi won the Grand Prize with his “Cinema.” In this work, he carefully painted many ethnic characters. The more closely you look his work, the more fun you would get out of it.
Kaitlin Wooley’s “Goddess of the Earth” won the Excellence Award with the technique of synthesizing. The work successfully expresses a nice picturesque world. “Oxygen” by Jeisse Alvarez da C gives us an energetic impact through abstract expressions. These works are very child like and good. We would like and expect other applicants to keep working and expand their unique world. This is a promising section, I think. Boys and girls, we are waiting for more of your amazing works.
