This is the ninth Toray Digital Creation Awards, and this year there are many extremely interesting works of art. The range of techniques has been expanding to include 2D drawings and illustrations, works depicting urban spaces, figurative works, and composites of photographic images. In particular, I think there were more humorous illustration-style works this year. As one might imagine, the winning entries tended to be precisely crafted figurative works. Also, a 65-year-old artist won this year’s Encouragement Award, and I would like the older artists keep up their efforts. I hope they will carry out their work with the aim of seeking rejuvenation. |

| [Review of Award-winning Works] |

This year marks the ninth DCA, anda composite
of multiple digital artwork was chosen for the Grand Prize
for the first time. “SSFW (Spring Summer Fall Winter)” by
Hisaaki Yamane is a monochromatic work with a profound atmosphere,
but ideas are incorporated into each of the works, which leaves
a very deep impression. Of all the entries we received, this
one stood out brilliantly as a work of art worthy of the Grand
Prize.
For the theme of “Love,” the Excellence Award was given to
Jun Fujiki for his work “Shell.” At first glance, this work
is an extraordinarily simple 2D drawing, but upon closer examination,
one finds a calculated and detailed delicacy of programming
that distinguishes it from earlier 3D CG works. It is drawn
with black lines, but it shows very crisp expression and is
also commendable in terms of the attempt to use new technique.
For the theme of “Touching,” the Excellence Award was given
to Motoo Fuse for “Touch sensor.” His idea for mapping a realistic
female body using a geometric pattern is very unique. The
combination of the pattern and the woman, plus the combination
of the graphics and reality, was extremely effective, I think.
For the theme of “contend,” the Excellence Award went to Petra
Stefankova for “Hard Words,” which expresses the world in
three dimensions using the traditional 3D style, while also
adding a fourth dimension in the style of trick art to create
an illusionary space, and it was extremely well done. While
the colors are expressed in metallic tones, producing a hard
atmosphere, it is an extremely interesting work spatially
for its use of distortion. I also find it very interesting
from a structural point of view, with highly skillful three-dimensional
modeling.
In the Junior Section, the Grand Prize was awarded to Shunsaku
Hayashi, who also won the Grand Prize last year. His work
this year was also excellent. He seems to be drawing a traditional
picture, but if you look carefully, it is filled to the corners
with detailed ideas, and the depth of expression comes across.
Among the Junior Section entries it stands out for its wealth
of ideas which never cease to entertain, and he excels in
combining delicacy with strength. Hayashi has won the Grand
Prize for the second consecutive time, and I think this demonstrates
what superb talent he has. Compared with his work last year,
he has shown real growth this year. I hope he will go on from
the DCA to make active use of his talent. |
