About the work |
 |
I heard about insect pupae from a friend who told me that an insect first dissolves inside its pupa. It is formless, surrounded by an outer covering, as if it is returning to an egg. When an insect emerges from its pupa it is not awaking from sleep but rather reconstructed and born again.
This made me think. Before they are born, animal embryos trace back on the history of life. I thought perhaps a similar kind of transformation was repeated inside the pupa as a sign that an adult insect was being forming?
I first drew an adult stag beetle using Illustrator and created its path data, and then reproduced the change within a pupa based on my imagination, like turning back time. (A series of five works) |

Receiving the award |
 |
Thank you very much for selecting "saikousei." I intend to continue creating pictures, and winning this award is definitely a major boost for me.
I used to like drawing pictures, or more to the point I liked using a brush. I got really into painting materials, and enjoyed making discoveries about these materials so much that I would lose track of time.
Even after starting out on the computer, I would work away silently on pictures, without thinking.
But recently I realized that because my mind had been fixed on making them look more attractive visually, my pictures were lacking an emotional aspect.
For this piece I made an effort to see how fantastical a picture I could draw for a theme rather than simply play around with the materials.
I am extremely pleased to have achieved such a result as this. And with this award as encouragement, I would like keep trying to improve the accuracy with which I portray my world and in the way I think. |
