About the work |
 |
My main thought was to express the sense of something ethereal emanating outward toward the viewer. I thought of a flower having a kind of incandescent "glow" of smell.
My process is a kind of play. I mix elements of shape and colour on many layers and see them interact. I hold the abstract concept of the theme loosely in my mind. The digital image is dynamic. It can move forward or backward and branch in many directions. So to me working this way has a kind of kinetic energy that I find very appealing. |

On receiving the award |
 |
It was a wonderful surprise to open my e-mail and discover that my work had been chosen for an honourable mention by the judges at the Toray DCA. In fact, I had kind of a delayed reaction. After the initial surprise it took a few moments for the news to sink in completely. I had tried to create a piece which reflected the nuance of the theme with a subtle approach. My goal was to extend the boundaries and techniques of my own digital art. So it's most gratifying to me as an artist to have my work recognized in this way.
This is a unique competition. The outstanding quality of work, diversity of artistic styles and the knowledge and expertise of the judges all combine to make the Toray DCA a prestigious event. I am honoured to have my work in the company of such talented and accomplished individuals.
On a broader scope as well, I'm happy that Toray has undertaken to promote and expand the horizons of digital art. This contest provides digital artists with recognition of their work, an important forum to display the work and a focus for creation of new work. I am already looking forward to next year's competition. |
