| About the work |
|
There are often moments where people can't or won't laugh at something that others find amusing. Sometimes factors such as membership of a minority group, a sense of superiority or weakness that decides how people act.
It seems that the impact upon society of these differences is the same no matter when and where people live. Sometimes it shapes human character, and other times it even triggers conflict. It's not an exaggeration to say that society is defined by the many different relationships of laughter.
I created a choir of people lined up together laughing with the idea some kind of pattern might emerge by gazing down at their contrasting faces. Just as there are different voices such as soprano and baritone, the choir of laughter includes all kinds of laughter, from high-pitched, silly and sycophantic laughter, to snide laughter. The song of laughter is produced by combining solo parts with collective laughter.

| Thank you very much for lending an ear to the choir of laughter. In truth, I wanted to submit a cool, eye-grabbing work of art that was a little cynical with the subtlety of abstract, but inspired by the theme "Laughter, Smiles, Happiness, Joy" and steeling myself to be criticized for a sophomoric contradiction, I was true to my ideas and expressed myself with frankness. For that reason, I find it extremely hard to conceal my surprise and gratitude to the members of the Screening Committee who accepted my interpretation, and I am extremely happy. I am full of smiles. Of course, I do feel badly for the others who didn't get the chance to smile, like those included in the concept behind this artwork…. |
