About the work |
The father always makes machines that don't sell. This is a lucky prize tree. He created it by hollowing out a withered tin tree. The ropes are all attached to prizes, but the booby prize is the father's cogwheel. Reporters and others come to see it out of curiosity. |

Receiving the award |
I never expected to be awarded a prize. There were a great many reasons why I might not have been selected. This is the first time I can say, "I'd like to thank the members of the Screening Committee." In the early 1980s, I was going against the times drawing strange creatures and the downtown area using watercolor and pen. Around that time, Professor Yoichiro Kawaguchi gave a lecture at our university. Back then, the computer graphics used in movies was crude. Sweeping aside that bias, he revealed the dazzling mystery of the 3D world. My eyes were opened, and I thought, "There's a new age coming." However, during the lecture Professor Kawaguchi said, "The vision you have of what you want to create is more important than the tools." He reflected on the impact that the beautiful sea and wildlife of his hometown had on his work in the new frontier of computer graphics. I couldn't agree with him more. I'll skip over the eventful years that followed. Recently, I've started working closely with Painter and creating pictures again. I'm still dedicated to it, but I've become an eccentric middle-aged man who paints pictures that don't sell. At last I've received an award. It's exaggeration to call it fate, but it's very encouraging and I can move on to the next piece of artwork. In the countryside where I live, boasting will get me laughed at. |
