This year, the competition among entrants was exceedingly tough.
Given that the works submitted were all of very high quality, my hat
goes off to those who won awards. This time, there were many, many
spectacular works-the Grand Prize winner, "Key," with its elaborate,
high-relief detail; "Wild Fantasy," with its impressive,
ultra-realistic parts of a cyborg from another dimension; "Eve
Story," with its spectacular detail; "Genetics," which is CG-like and
shows the transparent membrane of a floating, mathematical, living
entity; and all the other award-winning works. Many others showed
great promise. It will be very interesting to see how computer
graphic art develops.

We had a series of high-quality presentations this year. Although
we're very pleased, we struggled to select the most impressive ones
from among such high-quality entries. In the end, those works that
clearly communicated a unique message, a high level of creative
intention and the broad perceptiveness of their creator received the
highest scores.
People tend to be impressed by the technology when viewing digitally
created art. But beauty is something we seek as an ultimate end.
Human beings only try to express it. The winner of the Grand Prize
this year illustrated the effective use of technology, attention to
detail, continuous effort and warm feelings.
Digital technology will be more easily implemented, enabling more
people to use it to express themselves. We are anxiously awaiting
next year's works.

It was a pleasure to see the wonderful growth in interest for the second
annual Digital Creation Awards. The large number of excellent entries and
the broad variety of entries made the judging difficult to say the least.
The digital medium for creativity has been broadly accepted. The increase of
entries representing traditional media styles was especially pleasing. I am
looking forward to seeing what the coming year will bring to this wonderful
forum for artists.

Second Digital Creation Awards Contest
The sponsors of the Second Digital Creation Awards are delighted by
the dramatic increase in the number of contestants. Contestants
submitted 395 works for the contest. The large increase in the number
of contestants was matched by an amazing improvement in the quality of
the works. Contestants spanning a wide range of ages and
nationalities, provided a glimpse at the future possibilities of
digital art.
The prize winning works showed clear evidence of this with a broad
spectrum of expression that included paintings, illustrations and
three dimensional works. Tomohiro Kimura captured the top award for
his work entitled "Key." Critics praised the work for its creativity
and artistry. Recalling the excitement of the day the winning works
were selected, I am sure that, like myself, there are many others who
are anxiously waiting the day next year's winners are selected.
