| On receiving the award |

I drew a mask that is lying quietly on the bottom of the sea. I imagined that the mask could, at any time, make something happen with its power because the mask had been dropped during a masquerade, which took place on a ship that sailed over European seas long time ago. I depicted in a simple way the mask's beauty surrounded by the quietness of the sea. It is a magical mask; the mask conceals with it a tremendous power, and anyone that puts on the mask will gain mysterious power. It's like that of the movie "Mask."
When I learned that my work was chosen for an award, I was very surprised and, at the same time, my heart was filled with joy. I felt that sometimes it's better to draw off the top of my head rather than to think things through. Before I drew this piece of work, I had been drawing another piece, which I spending long time to create - thinking about it and changing various parts. So I'm glad that I was able to come up with this drawing. I wish to use this opportunity to challenge other similar opportunities when available. My father told me that my late grandfather worked for Toray for 30 years during the Showa era. I feel like the fate meant for this to happen. Thank you very much. |
