Shunsaku Hayashi [THE GATE OF THE DEVIL WORLD]
Award-Winning Work

[THE GATE OF THE DEVIL WORLD]
[Comments on the prize-winning work]
This work is a depiction of the character 'AQUA' who became tired of living in Hell and is passing through the gates of Hell to a different dimension.
When did you start using computers?
When I was about seven years old.

What provided your first opportunity to use a computer?
Because my father does a bit of drawing, I have grown up in an environment where painting supplies are all around, so I began drawing from a young age. And once we got a PC I had a go at creating images on it.

Why did you enter the DCA?
This was because Mr. Tosa of Maywa Denki was a member of the screening committee. For a number of years I have watched him on the TV program Daredemo Picasso [Anyone Could Become Picasso]. I wondered what he would think of my artwork.

Could you tell us something about aspects of your award-winning work 'THE GATE OF THE DEVIL WORLD' that you paid particular attention to or that posed difficulties?
This was a B3-size work drawn with a ballpoint pen and acrylic paint, which I then scanned and printed out, before using a ballpoint pen to draw apparitions in the empty spaces. The hard part was the process of scanning and combining the apparitions. One aspect I paid particular attention to was drawing the apparitions precisely with a ballpoint pen on top of the part that I had painted

Your work was popular with the screening committee for 'presenting a unique world with the power to really captivate people.' What sort of attitude underlies the painting?
There wasn't anything that I was conscious of in particular. I just had fun drawing as usual

Where did your idea for the painting come from?
I was inspired by the films directed by Tim Burton, the novels of Clive Barker, illustrations, the paintings of Salvador Dali, and other works. I have accumulated such sources of inspiration within me and I think they come out in the images I create.

What are your dreams for the future?
I want to express myself in a broad range of ways, not limited exclusively to drawing or animation.

Thank you very much.
