DCA JUNIOR Interview
In this section, we interview the past DCA JUNIOR winners to hear about their process of artistic creation and techniques. The third interviewee is Ms. Haruka Kubozono, Excellence Award winner of DCA JUNIOR 2005. The Screening Committee members highly rated Ms. Kubozono's award-winning work for its composition in which expressive pieces of stationery are arranged as if they were dancing in the space. Another reason for winning the Excellence Award is the concept of a witch working stationery. The following is an interview with Ms. Kubozono.

Award-Winning Work
[Comments on the award-winning work ]
Imagining how wonderful it would be to be able to use magic, I drew a picture of casting a spell over stationery to help me with my homework.
I drew it using Photoshop Elements, which I always use, but I also learned how to use a function I hadn't used before from my mother. It was really really fun trying out a lot of things.
About when did you start using computers?
When I was in first grade.

What was the reason you first started to use computers?
I saw my mother using a PC to draw pictures and it looked fun, so I asked her to teach me how to do it.

Why did you decide to enter the DCA contest?
I enjoyed drawing with CG, so I wanted to enter some kind of contest. When I found out about the DCA contest I really wanted to take on the challenge.

Could you tell us about some things you paid particular attention to for your award-winning work "I am a magician"?
I worked to show the feeling and special qualities of each type of stationery. I wanted to create a powerful and fun picture.

Haruka, your work was very popular among the Screening Committee members for its use of space and expressiveness of each type of stationery. What kinds of feelings did you want to express with this work?
I always imagine how wonderful it would be to be able to use magic. When I drew this picture, I wish I could use it to make my stationery help me with my homework.

How did you come up with ideas for your pictures?
I draw what I like at that time. When I was making this picture, I was into witches so I drew one.

What are your dreams for the future?
I like CG so I will continue creating pictures so that I can become better with practice. But I don't want to limit myself to CG. I want to try out a lot of different things.

Thank you very much.

Key Lessons!
Click on each picture to enlarge it.
Step 1.  I carefully draw a sketch, scan it, and then use a pen tablet to complete it.
Step 2.  The secret to creating my pictures is to draw while separating the layers in Photoshop Elements. First I do the background color.
Step 3.  Then I do the background colors of each of the balloons.
Step 4.  For skin color, I apply layers for each individual part.
Step 5.  I complete it in this way. In the case of this picture, I drew it with an amazing 11 separate layers.
