WINNER'S TIPS
In this page, we interview past DCA award winners and ask them about their art production processes and techniques. Our second interviewee is Mr. Tadaaki Mizushina of Yamagata Prefecture. The award winning artwork of Mr. Mizushina was highly praised by the screening committee members, for its youthful energy flowing out of the screen, and detailed expressions. The interview will focus on his world of creation.

Award-Winning Work
[Comments on the prize-winning work]
Inorganic matter is symbolized by glasses which are created in the 3D world, and various characters that seem as if they just jumped out of a toy box. A mysterious melody being played can be heard from such a world.
These images are something that hand-painting cannot fully express-- the images of strange glasses created by computer calculation, a tool called 3D. They look unrealistically shiny, and are having fun conversations with the characters. I tried to create a work that seems to deliver a cheerful melody floating along with languages from these images.
What was your first motive to start creating CG?
I'm sure there are many people who got interested in CG from playing computer games. I'm one of them. I always thought I wanted to create pictures like those while playing these games. It was the summer of my junior year when I started using my personal computer very seriously, and I've been studying it ever since.

Tell us what motivated you to enter the DCA contest.
I was creating my works for fun, and when I had enough works done, I started wondering about possibly presenting them to the public. That was when I heard about this art contest from one of my friends, and thought I should try to enter one of mine.

For the award winning work "music", which parts did you want to be most unique, or go through special efforts to create?
What I wanted to be unique about was expressing the texture of glass. Instead of simply using the texture function on my CG software, I created the feel of shining glass on my own, by adjusting the parameter. It was, of course, on a trial and error basis. I even went to one-dollar shops to buy different types of glasses, and observed a variety of glass textures. More importantly, I made sure that I achieved what I wanted, by actually using the preview function many times, until I was fully satisfied with the shine.
There are many parts I had a tough time working on, but among them, the most difficult one was the work of rendering. Since my work is made by the combining of many detailed small parts, it ended up as a very large data file, as a whole. As a result, I frequently experienced times like I had to wait for three days to see the overall picture after rendering. It was not only during the rendering, but also other parts of the production process, when I was frustrated that I just could not get the work going smoothly. Since the file size was so large, the speed of processing data was very slow.

Your work was highly praised among the screening committee members, who commented on that it was filled with motions, and that the boisterous and fun atmosphere of music was well expressed. Did you have any specific theme while working on it?
Actually, I love drawing manga and I do it on a regular basis. This artwork was produced by doing what I always do, by just replacing a pen with a mouse, and paper with the PC screen. It was sort of similar doing graffiti! But the graffiti mysteriously starts to appear so lively by making it three-dimensional. It was one of my discoveries during the production process this time that, by given the stereoscopic sense, the artwork becomes filled with motions.
Another thing is that I work on my art while imagining how my audience would feel about it. To put it in another way, I wanted to create a work that gives my audience a fun, enjoyable feeling. I would be really happy if they felt that way by looking at my work.

Can you offer any words of encouragement to those who are planning to enter their work for the next DCA?
Nowadays, the kind of high-performance PC that professional artists use, is widely available to the average person. The same is true for CG software, too. In other words, the time has come when anyone can create a marvelous image with only a little bit of practice.
That is why artwork shines only when the artist's individuality is fully expressed. You may put some terrific effect to your artwork, but it would be meaningless if it was merely a simple task that can be done by anyone. A PC is just a tool for your expression. My suggestion is that, instead of simply staring at your PC screen all day, how about going out to play sports, see movies, have fun with your friends, work a part-time job, or do some other forms of physical activity. You will find some clues to creating art from such activities, and you can take advantage of them.

Thank you very much.

Key Lessons!
Click on each picture to enlarge it.
While I am not the type of artist who starts with a rough draft drawing on paper, I draw the very image that comes into to my mind directly on my PC. In this case, I boldly draw the outline with the mouse.
I use "rotation" and "revolution" functions of SoftImage, to create the basic shape of a glass.
I then go on to select "texture" from the texture menu. For this particular work, I used "glass."
That's how the glass was completed! (It may seem simple, but actually, it is quite difficult to master just this one procedure!)
